Pop artist and MC co-founder Marc Anthony meets with orphaned children in the Dominican Republic.
CHICAGO (March 5, 2012) – Maestro Cares Foundation Co-Founders, global pop icon Marc Anthony and entrepreneur Henry Cardenas, today announced that the Foundation has received a land donation by the Dominican-based company Central Romana Corporation. The land will serve to house 43 boys currently living in the Orfanato Niños de Cristo, an orphanage located in La Romana, Dominican Republic.
The Dominican orphanage will be the first to directly benefit from the Maestro Cares Foundation.
“The donation of this land is invaluable,” expressed Anthony. “It will change the lives of these children and bring a great, positive energy to their environment. We would like to thank Central Romana Corporation for their enormous support and contribution.
According to the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLA), between 1990 and 2010, the poverty rate in Latin America dropped by 17 percentage points (from 48.4% to 31.4%). In 2007, 49.3% of children in the Dominican Republic lived in poverty, while 7.7% lived in extreme poverty.
“As we continue to fight against child homelessness and neglect in Latin American countries, we must also focus on improving their education, increasing medical assistance, and raising the agricultural level so that the children can grow to be fully productive,” said Cardenas.
In its flagship report, The State of the World’s Children 2012, the United Nation’s Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported that denials of children’s rights to survival, health, nutrition, education and protection are widespread in urban environments, and although cities generally offer better options for schooling and recreation, disadvantaged children in urban settings -- including children living in slums or working on the streets -- are unlikely to enjoy those benefits.
By providing children with education, recreation and other development programs within an orphanage, the Maestro Cares Foundation seeks to instill a culture that includes a strong work ethic, confidence, discipline and hope. A special account in the name of the Maestro Cares Foundation has been set up to receive donations and individuals will also be able to contribute to Maestro Cares through a series of concerts by Marc Anthony in 2012 to support the work of the Foundation.
